USED RC EXCAVATOR INSPECTION: WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BID

A practical seller-photo and video checklist for spotting mislabelled models, failing actuators and freight surprises.

THE FIELD MANUAL · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The cheapest secondhand excavator is often the one you can inspect from a distance before buying. Factory revisions, donor batteries and replacement arms make used construction models less predictable than a boxed toy. Use a structured request for photos and operational video, and be willing to move on when a seller cannot demonstrate the basics.

01. Identity and completeness first

Photograph the model tag, chassis underside, radio unit and battery labels. Confirm whether the listing includes one machine, one bucket, one transmitter, a machine battery, charging equipment and any extra attachments. A title that says “Huina 1580 hydraulic” is not a substitute for a photo showing a pump and hose circuit.

02. The movement video that matters

Ask for a continuous clip: power on, independent left/right track motion, straight reverse, full upper-body rotation, boom lift, stick extension, bucket curl, and a bucket scoop into loose material. Watch for grinding, stuttering, motor stalls and inconsistent response from the same control input. A silent display-room walkaround is not enough.

03. Wear often hides near the ground

Track pins, sprockets and lower frame parts collect grit, which accelerates wear. Look for cracks near track idlers, bent bucket teeth, broken hinge mounts and signs of disassembly. Heavy machines may have scratches from legitimate use; the important question is whether the drive and control system still behave normally.

04. The cost of delivery and returns

Heavy metal machines are expensive to pack, insure and return. Ask for the packed dimensions and actual weight. Verify seller location, freight insurance and a workable returns policy. Confirm whether lithium batteries are shipped separately or removed for carrier restrictions.

05. How to evaluate the offer

Compare the asking price with a functioning alternative after shipping, batteries and likely repairs. A good deal is a complete, demonstrably operational machine with parts that you can replace. Missing transmitters, mystery battery plugs and an “untested” claim should lower confidence, even if the photos look fantastic.

Compare the relevant models

The table is a starting point for researching listings, not a live price feed. Always verify the exact generation, battery and package contents on the seller's page.

What to check before purchasing

Seller photographs, an accurate model number and a working demonstration are more reliable than promotional claims. Check batteries, spare parts, shipping cost and returns, especially on heavy construction equipment and extensively upgraded crawlers. We recommend a compatible charger and careful LiPo handling for all rechargeable models.
