RC Airplane LiPo Battery Guide: Cells, Chargers, Connectors and Safety
The equipment details that matter more than chasing the largest battery capacity.

The equipment details that matter more than chasing the largest battery capacity. The goal is to make every purchase decision clearer, rather than to promise a magical beginner machine.
What the S number means
A “1S” pack contains one lithium-polymer cell, whereas 2S, 3S and 4S packs contain progressively more cells in series. Voltage must match the aircraft, ESC and motor specification. Higher cell count is not a casual upgrade; using the wrong pack can damage electronics or create a fire hazard.
Capacity and physical fit
mAh measures nominal capacity, not quality or guaranteed flight time. A heavier battery can alter center of gravity and stall behavior. The correct pack must physically fit, secure properly and maintain the airframe’s published balance point.
Connectors are not universal
Tiny micro aircraft often use different connectors from larger trainers. A seemingly minor plug mismatch can tempt risky adapters and poor-fitting connections. Confirm both the discharge connector and any balance lead arrangement, especially for packs in used bundles.
Charge with compatible equipment
Use a charger designed for the battery chemistry and cell count; follow the aircraft and battery manufacturers’ instructions. Inspect for swelling, cuts, heat damage or damaged insulation. Charge on a nonflammable surface under supervision, and keep packs away from combustible clutter.
Used batteries are a separate purchase decision
Batteries age in storage and with cycling. A seller’s claim that a pack “holds charge” does not establish its health or safe condition. Consider the airframe purchase separately from the used battery valuation. If a pack is swollen or damaged, do not charge or fly it.
Build a repeatable field checklist
Before every session, verify pack condition, voltage, connector fit, radio battery status, correct propeller clearance, control surfaces, receiver binding and flight-time reserve. Put battery labels on your organizer if you maintain several aircraft with different connectors.
What to check before buying on eBay
Compare the exact manufacturer item number, seller photographs, equipment list, recent condition information, battery and charger compatibility, shipping cost and return policy. A used bargain becomes expensive if the receiver, correct radio or repair spares are missing.
Aircraft can be dangerous when operated improperly. Read the manual, fly only where permitted and follow current local aviation and model-aircraft rules. When possible, work with an experienced pilot.
