Komatsu PC240 LC vs Volvo EC160E E111: Which Hydraulic RC Excavator?

The Komatsu brings a larger 1:12 platform and a steeper purchase price. The Volvo asks for a smaller hydraulic commitment.

Here is the serious end of the miniature excavator shelf. GoldLand lists the Komatsu PC240 LC hydraulic machine for $4,021 and the Volvo EC160E E111 hydraulic for $2,290 on our November 1 snapshot. Both are adult hobby machines, but their sizes and practical costs are dramatically different.

Rather than awarding a universal winner, compare your actual working area, the scope of the hydraulic maintenance you can handle and how much value you get from the larger machine. The advertised prices are reference snapshots, not checkout quotes.

01 / DECISION CHECK

The jobsite must fit the machine

The Komatsu product listing describes a model about 80.5 cm long, 24.8 cm wide and 26.7 cm tall in transport dimensions. At roughly 18.14 kg it needs a sturdy bench, safe lifting method and a working area where its digging radius can actually matter. Bigger also means the hauler, bucket size and loose-material pit have to grow with it.

The Volvo E111 weighs about 10.8 kg and is listed at 1:14. It remains a significant model, but it is easier to imagine operating in a more compact yard. Measure the width of ramps, doors and shelves rather than guessing from scale alone.

02 / DECISION CHECK

Hydraulic specifications are not lab comparisons

The Komatsu listing advertises a pump rated around 3.5 MPa along with an electric motor, valves and metal construction. That is an engineering specification—not a promise that every model will lift a certain load at every boom position. Pressure, cylinder area and linkage geometry all affect usable force.

GoldLand lists the Volvo E111 as a hydraulic system with a 7.4V battery. Without independent measurements under the same load, comparing these models by a single pressure number or marketing adjective would be misleading. Ask for an operating clip that shows the bucket filling, lifting and emptying under realistic conditions.

03 / DECISION CHECK

The hidden capital expense

At the listed prices, the Komatsu costs $1,731 more than the Volvo before accessories and ownership expenses. Set aside money for the specified hydraulic fluid, suitable charging equipment, replacement hoses and fittings, transportation cases and possible repair freight. International warranties may not pay to ship a heavy model back.

An additional vehicle also needs to make sense: the excavator will not feel especially productive if every bucket must be dumped in a pile because the hauler is too small. Model the whole dig–load–haul loop rather than shopping for the excavator in isolation.

04 / DECISION CHECK

Parts and support should decide the tie

Before buying either model, request actual exploded parts diagrams, seal and hose specifications, pump part numbers and the merchant’s service contact. Check whether parts are in stock or only listed for a future order. A high ticket price without repair support is a large risk.

For hydraulic kits, ask whether the system arrives filled and bled, what oil specification is approved, and what the owner may adjust without voiding coverage. Do not substitute a generic fluid because another model uses it; published product pages sometimes give conflicting oil guidance.

05 / DECISION CHECK

Our purchase rule

Choose the Komatsu only when its scale, physical size and operating experience are specifically what you want, and you have a storage and maintenance plan. The Volvo E111 is worth evaluating if you want a hydraulic machine in a more manageable class and want to preserve budget for supporting equipment.

Neither deserves a “tested best” badge here. We have not bought or operated these units. Ask for detailed current video, confirm shipping/returns and decide whether the added size would change the work you can actually perform.

SAVE THIS BEFORE BUYING

Five checks that protect your budget.

  1. Measure transport path, operating area and bench load rating.
  2. Request continuous digging video with the named variant.
  3. Get hydraulic service documentation and fluid requirements in writing.
  4. Clarify battery, charger, transmitter, import duties and shipping carrier.
  5. Ask who covers return freight for an 18 kg machine if it arrives defective.
QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is the PC240 automatically more powerful?

It is larger and has a merchant-advertised hydraulic-pressure specification, but we lack controlled comparable lifting measurements. Do not infer a universal performance win.

Which model is physically easier to transport?

The advertised 10.8 kg Volvo is lighter than the 18.14 kg Komatsu, though case weight and size also matter.

Are these appropriate first RC machines?

They are complex hydraulic hobby equipment. We would generally explore an electric excavator first if you are new to repairs, batteries and construction RC.
